A Client’s Perspective on Massage and Bodywork. What makes Co-creative Healing Different?

A Client’s Perspective on Massage and Bodywork. What makes Co-creative Healing Different?

by Jill Bickford

I like to care for my health and massage is one of my favorite ways to do this. I’ve had many massages over the years for various reasons – some times I just needed a little soothing relaxation; other times, I had an injury or pain that needed attention.  Some massage sessions were unremarkable and some were more characteristic, but overall there was always a similar current that ran through all my massage experiences. I laid on a table with only a sheet partially covering my body and just felt . . . uncomfortable. I felt awkward by how the therapist was relating with me, or just unsatisfied by the massage in general. I always explained to myself that I felt uncomfortable or unsatisfied because I’m just a “sensitive” person and so it was always uncomfortable to be touched by a someone I didn’t know – this was the only way I could make sense of my experience at the time.

It wasn’t until I received bodywork and massage from Stephanie for the first time that I realized that maybe it was actually natural to have felt uncomfortable during previous massages.

When another person touches your body, they are touching more than just muscles, and flesh – receiving a massage is a complex dance and a deeply personal experience. Too many massage therapists, it seems, don’t realize how giving or receiving a massage is a personal experience. Massage is innately personal because we are bodies, hearts, and souls – when someone touches our body, they are coming into contact with our whole being.

Stephanie is curious, caring, and treats my body as sacred. I am not just another body on her table. Tears have come to my eyes during several sessions, because of the deeply touching experience it is to be cared for in such a personal and real way.

Stephanie is quite intuitive and can feel areas that are storing wounds or pain. The way she works is not ‘practiced’ feeling, but rather feels unique and responsive. I feel relaxed and relieved, because I feel like she’s with me every moment. I often don’t need to say anything – she feels what’s going on and what my body needs.

The results of her massage therapy have been remarkable. Among many transformations, I had painful chronic spasms in my mid-back that have resolved. One of the reasons why deep transformation happens, is because Stephanie is not just a massage therapist, she is also a bodyworker. Equipped with the ability to do almost any massage or bodywork technique that will best serve the issue, the value is unmatched. Yet Stephanie’s years of training and “toolbox” of techniques just fade into the background, because what I end up receiving is always far more than I could imagine and exactly what I need.

thank you for sharing such an open and honest view from a client’s perspective. the benefits of massage are very real and more people need to consider this as part of their regular routine.
